I love that the Prince that was Promised prophecy involves a mistranslation. Of course it could also be a princess--gender is only of the most inconsistent grammatical rules across language boundaries.
It seems all gruff and barbaric likewise that the Dothraki language has no word for 'thank you,' but why would it? The major plot point involving Dothraki culture is that gifts are given and repaid in their own time. If you pass someone horsemeat around the campfire, the action is not complete until they hand you fermented mare's milk a week later. Perhaps then you then say some polite phrase which we do not see and which does not translate into English, indicating the debt has been resolved. Language both forms and is formed by the society in which it lives.
Here's a question: when the characters in Westeros see 'lion lizards' and 'spicy peppers stuffed with cheese,' what are they describing? Unsurprisingly lion-lizards, the predatory, reptilian, swamp-dwelling sigil of house Reed, seem to be alligators, which get their English name from the Spanish for 'the lizard.' Peppers stuffed with cheese are just what they sound like, though in English we call them chiles rellenos, a name borrowed from Spanish. As the Spanish language has no presence and no analogue in ASoIaF, Westeros has to describe these concept using its own words and its own concepts.
Now imagine we have a character whose name is a common noun, being discussed with someone who does not speak the language that noun exists in. The name might be shared phonetically, or it might be translated to the new language--especially if, say, the communication happens more on the level of concepts than on the level of words. For a name like Bloodraven this is easy enough. All languages have a word for blood, and all have a word for shiny black corvids, although they may or may not distinguish them from crows. But what about a name that's a little more specific? A culture that's extremely tree-focused have a word for every part of a tree, for example, and they may have a name for every part of every type of tree. But when translating a name meaning 'two month old bud on the upper branch of a weirwood' into the Common Tongue, for example, perhaps the best translation they could come up with would just be Leaf.
Bran is another example. Someone from the North would know it's a nickname of Brandon. Someone without that context might assume it refers to the edible husk removed from grain. And finally, someone whose culture eats a grain without a husk that needs removing might understand Bran's name as simply "Corn! Corn! Corn!"

one of the things i wish the show emphasised more is how awful jaime pushing bran out of that window was, permanently paralysing him. cos obviously doing that to a child is awful but the emphasis on how ruined bran sees his life now in the books is something i wish was translated onto screen better, because he wanted to be a knight, he had always always dreamt of becoming a knight he had no desire to get married or become a lord, all that mattered was becoming like all of his idols and become knighted, and that’s something that now he will never be able to do, because one man laid a simple hand on his chest and pushed him. that’s a harrowing thing for an eight year old to go through and it’s something, because it goes so undiscussed in the show, that is so frequently forgotten. bran is so tragic!

It fucks that there are so many characters that are an antithesis to one of The Seven while still embodying their traits and technically representing them. Cersei is the Mother in that she only has love for her own children, but no mercy or any sense of nurturing. Tywin represents the Father’s protection, his justice, but that justice is always unfair, and serves only him, not even his own children. I have a Rolodex of all the knights that warp the values of the Warrior. Jamie and Arthur have to break one vow to stay true to another. Sandor is vile and cruel and dishonorable, but still protective of the innocent. Tyrion does his best to mend the broken city and protect its people like the Smith would do, but is also actively destabilizing things and fucking shit up for his own personal gain. Margaery had managed to maintain being the idea of the Maiden while being married three times, and hiding her plotting under the guise of innocence and virtue. Bran is a young Crone, his wisdom and foresight forced upon him instead of being obtained naturally through age. And Arya is a wanderer with no identity, a killer who takes life at random. But unlike the Stranger, Arya is still Arya, no matter how she tries to hide herself. She is a scared girl with a bias, not killing unthinkingly but rather in order to enact her revenge and seek justice, the opposite of what Death would do. Anyways these kinds of foils absolutely fuck

"Not cry.Fly."
"I can't fly,"Bran said. "I can't ,I can't..."
"How do you know? Have you ever tried?"
"What are you doing to me ?" he asked the crowd tearful."
"Teaching you how to fly."
"I can't fly!"
"You're flying right now."
"I'm falling!"
"Every flight begins with a fall, the crow said. Look down."

🍁🐺Bran Stark🐺🍁
Along with Summer, his direwolf and three eyed raven
~~~~~~~~~~~
Bran: Do trees dream?
Luwin: Trees? No ...
Bran: They do. They dream tree dreams. I dream of a tree sometimes. A weirwood, like the one in the godswood. It calls to me. The wolf dreams are better. I smell things, and sometimes I can taste the blood.
To start off Disability Pride Month strong and celebrating the continuation of House of the Dragon season 2, I hope that Bran Stark gets so much sex and has so many kids, it ruins Westerosi democracy forever.
Tumblr media
Sansa’s accusation of his impotence in the finale was some of the most random, casual, quite possibly inaccurate ableism I’ve ever witnessed. Lots of paralyzed people go on to lead active, fulfilling sex lives, some can still have children, and Ms. Queen of the North is not even a healer, much less a medical expert. Meanwhile, Bran is the Three-Eyed Raven, he can watch any sex scene his wild ass country has ever perpetrated from now till the beginning of time, and he’s had literally all the time in the world to study. He’s the king of a newly united Westeros, the world is his oyster, and by the Old Gods and the New, for all we know, he’s got Podrick’s magic dick.
In this essay I will—
HALF IN SHADOW, HALF IN LIGHT
BRANDON STARK - “THE THREE EYED CROW”
Tumblr media
in the stillness of the void, a gaze sharp yet distant weaves two tales:
one of wisdom stretched beyond the reaches of time, and the other of innocence lost beneath the burden of lies.
a union of vision and torment, where truth cuts like a dagger, and the echoes of the past cling like shadows in the soul.
look deeper— can you glimpse eternity burning within his eyes?
